Problem

Ganbaru Method is a fitness community with 2.1 million social media followers. They initially found success with a bootstrapped training app developed by a small engineering team. However, over time the product became bogged down by feature creep and mounting technical debt, testing the patience of loyal followers and subscribers. The founder had reached a limit and needed help to find a sustainable path forward for growth.

Insight

A mix of quantitative and qualitative research revealed that new customers were hesitant to subscribe to the app due to uncertainty about the fitness programs and instructors available, creating friction in the sign-up process. Customers wanted the ability to ‘try before they buy’ to ensure they would see results. User interviews highlighted the need for greater flexibility and a smoother browsing experience, both before and after subscribing. Existing customers also expressed a desire for more variety and a wider range of programs to support their evolving training goals. To address these concerns, a dynamic fitness platform was essential – one that could adapt to users’ changing needs over time.

Solution

To reduce friction and build trust, I designed an open platform that allowed potential customers to browse workouts from coaches before committing to a subscription. I also improved the Program Listing Page (PLP) with better categorisation for a more efficient browsing experience and enhanced the Program Details Page (PDP) to provide users with the key information needed to purchase with confidence. To expand Ganbaru’s offering, I integrated a wider range of programs from a team of coaches, ensuring a more diverse selection to meet different training needs. Finally, I crafted a seamless paywall checkout flow designed to increase conversion and drive subscriptions.
